Advances in Contemporary Nurse Recuitment and Retention
By: Margaret McMillan (ed.); Jane Conway (ed.)
Published by: eContent Management, Pty Ltd
The need to imagine, examine, study, take a proactive stance in regard to and make a steadfast commitment to the future of nursing has never been more imperative. As Bezold et al. (1999: 4) persuasively argue, the nursing profession (and others) have never had a greater need to understand the future, to envision a preferred future, and to develop strategies to create the preferred future than it does today. Vision and commitment are needed more than ever. The reasons for this are twofold. First, the nursing profession world-wide is facing a crisis in recruitment and retention. This crisis, widely recognised as involving the worst nursing shortage in the last 50 years (Hodges et al. 2002), is having a significant and negative impact on health care and the capacities of the health care systems around the world (including the Australian health care system) to respond appropriately, safely, and effectively to the health needs of the individuals, groups and communities they serve. There is a critical need for stakeholders to collectively and creatively think and work their way out of this crisis. A second key reason is that the health, welfare and well-being of both current and future generations depends on the access, equity, quality and viability of professional nursing services. The accessibility and sustainability of quality nursing services, in turn, depend on nursing futures work and the capacity of this work to confront the will to act in regard to the realisation of a preferred healthier future for all (Bezold et al. 1999: 4). In sum, the future of nursing is imperative because: Nursings future is inextricably, and rightly so, bound to societys future and the future of health care (Bezold et al. 1999:8). Australian health care crisis Few would disagree that Australian health care is in a crisis. Despite policies that advocate access and equity to Australias health care services, thousands of Australians do not have timely access to a

Boys in school and society
By: Cresswell, John; Rowe, Ken; Withers, Graeme
Published by: Australian Council for Educational Research
In the past decade there has been a growing perception in Australia
that girls have become more successful pursuing their educational
goals than boys especially in educational outcomes relating to
literacy. In addition there is evidence from a range of studies that boys
regard their school experience less favourably than girls and are less
strongly engaged in the work of schools. This paper focuses on
students achievement and attitudes to school, and the influences that
shape different outcomes for boys and girls. Beyond school, a smaller
proportion of boys than girls progress to higher education, although
a larger proportion of boys participate in vocational education and
training programs. Consideration is also given to the broader social
development of boys and how schools contribute to that development.

The Case for Change
By: Mellor, Suzanne; Corrigan, Matthew
Published by: Australian Council for Educational Research
This review calls for change. Over the last two decades, a plethora of government
policies have been developed to improve the educational outcomes of Indigenous
students. These policies have, as yet, failed to reduce significantly the gap between
the educational achievements of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students in
Australia. This review examines the research evidence underpinning current
government policy. It reviews and analyses existing educational research into the
precursors and concomitant factors that contribute to educational achievement for
students generally and for Indigenous students in particular. The review argues that
current policy in Indigenous education is not sufficiently supported by comprehensive
and substantive research evidence, and argues that changes to both research
methodologies and content should be made. The authors propose a national
research agenda that systematically identifies and supports policy change directed
at significantly improving the educational outcomes for all Indigenous students. Only
then can Indigenous students become full citizens, able to fulfil their full potential.

Children's Ways of Knowing
By: Robertson, Margaret (ed.); Gerber, Rod (ed.)
Published by: Australian Council for Educational Research
How do young people navigate their way through school, home
and the Internet? What value systems are they adopting?
What strategies are young people using to learn: problem solving,
trial and error, risk taking, common-sense learning, intuition or
activity based learning? In order to motivate children to learn in
classrooms, educational practices need to evolve from the content
and range of young peoples personal experiences.
In their first book, The Childs World (ACER Press 2000), Margaret
Robertson and Rod Gerber examined the idea that insight into
how children interact with the world around them can be used to
improve their ways of learning.
Childrens Ways of Knowing explores further the experiences of
children as they make sense of their environment. This collection
of essays draws on contributions from experts in fields as diverse
as education, information technology, popular culture, philosophy,
geography, architecture and the environment.

Closing the Gap Between Research and Practice
By: de Lemos, Marion
Published by: Australian Council for Educational Research
For some decades, world-wide, there have been national initiatives to
improve literacy rates and standards. During the same period,
concentrated research studies have been undertaken to find out how
best to achieve the desired improvements. Two main thrusts in
teaching and learning how to read and write have emerged, often in
controversy. One is generally known as the 'whole language'
approach and the other concentrates more on instruction in phonics.
What works? This paper focuses on the theoretical assumptions
underlying these two approaches to the teaching of literacy, and the
studies which have been undertaken, in the international arena, to
find out how children progress, from their earliest educational years,
in attaining both initial reading skills and lifelong literacy.
