Computer Algebra in Scientific Computing
By: Ganzha, V.G. (ed.); Mayr, E.W. (ed.); Vorozhtsov, E.V. (ed.)
Published by: Springer
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Workshop on Computer Algebra in Scientific Computing, CASC 2007, held in Bonn, Germany, in September 2007. The volume is dedicated to Professor Vladimir P. Gerdt on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The 35 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions for inclusion in the book. The papers cover not only various expanding applications of computer algebra to scientific computing but also the computer algebra systems themselves and the CA algorithms. Topics addressed are studies in polynomial and matrix algebra, quantifier elimination, and Gr??bner bases, as well as stability investigation of both differential equations and difference methods for them. Several papers are devoted to the application of computer algebra methods and algorithms to the derivation of new mathematical models in biology and in mathematical physics.

Computer Solution of Large Linear Systems Studies in Mathematics and its Applications Volume 28 (SMIA)
By: Unknown
Published by: North Holland
The Symposium was the latest in a long-running and well-respected series in this key area of IFAC's technical interest. Its aim was to address the control aspects of those industrial, economic, social and environmental systems whose characteristics are high dimensionality, non-linearity and uncertainty, associated with a multitude of structural forms, with intense and time critical information exchange and efficient co-ordination. The Symposium covered all major aspects of large scale, complex systems including methodological aspects, technological solutions and practical applications.

Concentration Inequalities and Model Selection
By: Massart, Pascal; Picard, Jean (ed.)
Published by: Springer
Since the impressive works of Talagrand, concentration inequalities have been recognized as fundamental tools in several domains such as geometry of Banach spaces or random combinatorics. They also turn out to be essential tools to develop a non-asymptotic theory in statistics, exactly as the central limit theorem and large deviations are known to play a central part in the asymptotic theory. An overview of a non-asymptotic theory for model selection is given here and some selected applications to variable selection, change points detection and statistical learning are discussed. This volume reflects the content of the course given by P. Massart in St. Flour in 2003. It is mostly self-contained and accessible to graduate students.

Continuous Lattices and Domains
By: Gierz, G.; Hofmann, K. H.; Keimel, K.; Lawson, J. D.; Mislove, M.; Scott, D. S.; Rota, G.-C.
Published by: Cambridge University Press
Information content and programming semantics are just two of the applications of the mathematical concepts of order, continuity and domains. This authoritative and comprehensive account of the subject will be an essential handbook for all those working in the area.

Continuous Linear Representations
By: Magyar, Z.
Published by: North Holland
This monograph gives access to the theory of continuous linear representations of general real Lie groups to readers who are already familiar with the rudiments of functional analysis and Lie groups. The first half of the book is centered around the relation between a continuous linear representation (of a Lie group over a Banach space or even a more general space) and its tangent; the latter is a Lie algebra representation in a sense. Starting with the Hille-Yosida theory, quite recent results are reached. The second half is more standard unitary theory with applications concerning the Galilean and Poincare groups. Appendices help readers with diverse backgrounds to find the precise descriptions of the concepts needed from earlier literature. Each chapter includes exercises.

Corings and Comodules
By: Brzezinski, Tomasz; Wisbauer, Robert; Cassels, J. W. S.
Published by: Cambridge University Press
This is the first extensive treatment of the theory of corings and their comodules. In the first part, the module-theoretic aspects of coalgebras over commutative rings are described. Corings are then defined as coalgebras over non-commutative rings. Topics covered include module-theoretic aspects of corings, such as the relation of comodules to special subcategories of the category of modules (sigma-type categories), connections between corings and extensions of rings, properties of new examples of corings associated to entwining structures, generalisations of bialgebras such as bialgebroids and weak bialgebras, and the appearance of corings in non-commutative geometry.

Covering Codes
By: Cohen, G.; Honkala, I.; Litsyn, S.
Published by: North Holland
The problems of constructing covering codes and of estimating their parameters are the main concern of this book. It provides a unified account of the most recent theory of covering codes and shows how a number of mathematical and engineering issues are related to covering problems. Scientists involved in discrete mathematics, combinatorics, computer science, information theory, geometry, algebra or number theory will find the book of particular significance. It is designed both as an introductory textbook for the beginner and as a reference book for the expert mathematician and engineer. A number of unsolved problems suitable for research projects are also discussed.

Developing Thinking in Algebra
By: Mason, J; Graham, A; Johnston-Wilder, S
Published by: Sage Publications, Ltd (UK)
'This is an incredibly interesting and thought provoking book. Intended for anyone interested in developing their own mathematical thinking, or of the students they teach, whether at a primary level or right through to FE. The book is a delightful blend of theory and practice - encouraging the reader to participate, to solve problems and to develop their own thinking' - Peter Hall, Imberhorne School, East Grinstead. Algebra has always been a watershed for pupils learning mathematics. Nevertheless pupils bring to school all the necessary natural powers for thinking algebraically, including organizing, classifying and generalizing. Developing Thinking in Algebra enables teachers and their support staff to experience and to teach algebraic thinking to pupils aged seven to 16 years. By integrating pedagogy and subject knowledge through experiencing a variety of tasks for learners, readers of this book will see how to engage all learners in successfully thinking algebraically. This book is the course reader for The Open University Course ME625 Developing Algebraic Thinking

Difference Algebra
By: Levin, Alexander; Verschoren, A. (ed.)
Published by: Apress
Difference algebra grew out of the study of algebraic difference equations with coefficients from functional fields. The first stage of this development of the theory is associated with its founder, J.F. Ritt (1893-1951), and R. Cohn, whose book Difference Algebra (1965) remained the only fundamental monograph on the subject for many years. Nowadays, difference algebra has overgrown the frame of the theory of ordinary algebraic difference equations and appears as a rich theory with applications to the study of equations in finite differences, functional equations, differential equations with delay, algebraic structures with operators, group and semigroup rings. The monograph is intended for graduate students and researchers in difference and differential algebra, commutative algebra, ring theory, and algebraic geometry. The book is self-contained; it requires no prerequisites other than the knowledge of basic algebraic concepts and a mathematical maturity of an advanced undergraduate.
