Introduction to the Theory of Cooperative Games
By: Peleg, Bezalel; Sudholter, Peter
Published by: Springer

Presents the solutions of cooperative games: the core, bargaining set, kernel, nucleolus, and the Shapley value of TU games, and the core, the Shapley value, and the ordinal bargaining set of NTU games. This book culminates in uniform and coherent axiomatizations of all the foregoing solutions. more...

The Iterated Prisoners' Dilemma
By: Kendall, Graham; Yao, Xin; Chong, Siang Yew
Published by: World Scientific

In 1984, Robert Axelrod published a book, relating the story of two competitions which he ran, where invited academics entered strategies for the Iterated Prisoners’ Dilemma. The book, almost 20 years on, is still widely read and cited by academics and the general public. As a celebration of that landmark work, we have recreated those competitions to celebrate its 20th anniversary, by again inviting academics to submit prisoners’ dilemma strategies. The first of these new competitions was run in July 2004, and the second in April 2005. Iterated Prisoners’ Dilemma: 20 Years On essentially provides an update of the Axelrod’s book. Specifically, it. • Presents the prisoners’ dilemma, its history and variants. • Highlights original Axelrod's work and its impact. • Discusses results of new competitions. • Showcases selected papers that reflect the latest researches in the area. more...

Optimal Control of Nonlinear Processes
By: Grass, Dieter; Caulkins, Jonathan P.; Feichtinger, Gustav; Tragler, Gernot; Behrens, Doris A.
Published by: Springer

Dynamic optimization is rocket science a" and more. This volume teaches how to harness the modern theory of dynamic optimization to solve practical problems, not only from space flight but also in emerging social applications such as the control of drugs, corruption, and terror. These innovative domains are usefully thought about in terms of populations, incentives, and interventions, concepts which map well into the framework of optimal dynamic control. This volume is designed to be a lively introduction to the mathematics and a bridge to these hot topics in the economics of crime for current scholars. We celebrate Pontryagina (TM)s Maximum Principle a" that crowning intellectual achievement of human understanding a" and push its frontiers by exploring models that display multiple equilibria whose basins of attraction are separated by higher-dimensional DNSS "tipping points." That rich theory is complemented by numerical methods available through a companion web site. more...

Partner Choice and Cooperation in Networks
By: Ule, Aljaz
Published by: Springer

Cooperation is beneficial but may be hard to achieve in situations where the selfish interests of individuals conflict with their common goal, such as in sharing of goods, help, knowledge or information, in trade and pollution negotiations, and in exploitation of common resources. The standard models of such "social dilemmas" assume that the individuals are obliged to participate in the dilemma. These models fail to capture an important element of human interaction: that people are in general free to select their interaction partners. In this book a social dilemma with partner selection is introduced and studied with the methods of formal game theory, experimental economics and computer simulations. It allows exploration of simultaneous dynamics of the network structure and cooperative behavior on this structure. The results of this study show that partner choice strongly facilitates cooperation and leads to networks where free-riders are likely to be excluded. more...

Satisficing and Maximizing
By: Byron, Michael
Published by: Cambridge University Press

How do we think about what we plan to do? One dominant answer is that we select the best possible option available. However, since we are not equipped to maximize we often choose the next best alternative, one that is no more than satisfactory. This strategy choice is called satisficing. more...

A Simple Game-Theoretic Approach to Suppression of Enemy Defenses and Other Time Critical Target Analyses
By: Hamilton , Thomas; Mesic , Richard
Published by: RAND

The effectiveness of attacks on time critical targets (suppression of enemy air defenses, interdiction, and anti-theater ballistic missile missions) often depends on decisions made by the adversary. Game theory is a way to study likely changes in enemy behavior resulting from various attack capabilities and goals. more...
