Systems Self-Assembly
By: Krasnogor, Natalio; Gustafson, Steve; Pelta, David A.
Published by: Elsevier Science
Self-assembly is a process that creates complex heirarchical structures through the statistical exploration of alternative configurations. These processes occur without external intervention. Self-Assembly processes are ubiquitous in nature. Understanding how nature produces self-assembled systems will represent an enormous leap forward in our technological capabilities. Robustness and versatility are some of the most important properties of self-assembling natural systems. Although systems where self-assembly occurs, or which are created by a self-assembling process, are remarkably vaired, some common principles are starting to be discerned. The unifying thread throughout the book is the "Computational Nature of Self-Assembling Systems."

Theory of Rank Tests
By: Sidak, Zbynek; Sen, Pranab K.; Hajek, Jaroslav
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)
The first edition of Theory of Rank Tests (1967) has been the precursor to a unified and theoretically motivated treatise of the basic theory of tests based on ranks of the sample observations. For more than 25 years, it helped raise a generation of statisticians in cultivating their theoretical research in this fertile area, as well as in using these tools in their application oriented research. The present edition not only aims to revive this classical text by updating the findings but also by incorporating several other important areas which were either not properly developed before 1965 or have gone through an evolutionary development during the past 30 years. This edition therefore aims to fulfill the needs of academic as well as professional statisticians who want to pursue nonparametrics in their academic projects, consultation, and applied research works.

World Health Report 2000
By: World Health Organization
Published by: World Health Organization
The World Health Report 2000 is an expert analysis of the increasingly important influence of health systems in the daily lives of people worldwide. To an unprecedented degree it takes account of the role of people as providers and consumers of health services, as financial contributors to health systems, as workers within them, and as citizens engaged in their responsible management, or stewardship. Health systems provide the critical interface between life-saving, life-enhancing interventions and the people who need them. If health systems are weak, the power of these interventions is likewise weakened, or even lost. Health systems thus deserve the highest priority in any efforts to improve health or ensure that resources are wisely used. In recent decades, health systems have contributed enormously to better health for most of the global population. As the new century begins, they have the potential to achieve further improvements in human wellbeing, especially for the poor. But very little has yet been done to unravel the complex factors which explain good or bad performance by individual health systems. Given equal resources, why do some succeed where others fail? Is performance simply driven by the laws of supply and demand, or does another logic apply? Why is dissatisfaction with services so widespread, even in wealthy countries offering the latest interventions? If systems need improvement, what tools exist to measure performance and outcomes?. These are some of the many questions addressed in this report. Drawing upon a range of experiences and analytical tools, the report traces the evolution of health systems, explores their diverse characteristics, and uncovers a unifying framework of shared goals and functions. Using this as a basis for analysis, the report breaks new ground in presenting an index of health system performance based on three fundamental goals: improving the level and distribution of health, enhancing the responsiveness of the system to t

World Health Report 2003
By: World Health Organization
Published by: World Health Organization
The World Health Report 2003: Shaping the Future: A Vision for Global Health predicts that major global health improvements will be achieved in the next few years. Dr Jong-Wook Lee, Director-General of WHO, describes WHOs ambition ''to help all people, but especially the poorest among them, to shape a better future''. The report advocates a new drive for equitable health improvement as a vital part of global efforts for justice and security. Drawing on lessons of the past, in particular the Health for All movement that was launched 25 years ago, this years report focuses on the major health gains that are possible in the coming years and shows how WHO and the global health community can achieve these objectives. Against a backdrop of the ambitious targets of the Millennium Development Goals, The World Health Report 2003 presents a comprehensive vision encompassing an analysis of todays major health challenges and an action programme for global health improvement. The section on infections singles out for special attention HIV/AIDS, poliomyelitis whose elimination is within reach and new infections including SARS. Another important section deals with the health of women and children. The focus of the noncommunicable diseases section is on road traffic injuries and the continuing work on tobacco control. In order to achieve the health improvements that are within their grasp, countries need well-functioning health systems. The report shows how systems can be strengthened, combining both primary care facilities and higher-level services linked by an efficient and integrated referral network. In this, as in all its work, WHO renews its commitment to working with countries in responding to national and local health challenges.
